I took a trip to Duisburg last weekend, just a two

I took a trip to Duisburg last weekend, just a two-hour drive from Antwerp. Duisburg used to be one of the engines of the German heavy industry, and the area was plastered with coalmines and steel factories. Those started closing down in the seventies, which caused the economy to come to a virtual standstill. Since then, the city (and the entire Ruhr Area) had to redefine and transform itself. Here are my impressions.
1. Tiger & Turtle is a rollercoaster for pedestrians built on top of an old slag heap.
2. Landschaftspark Duisburg-Nord is a massive old steel factory turned into a museum and a leisure park.
3. The Innenhafen is the part of the Duisburg port bordering the city centre. Once almost empty, it’s now the city’s hippest part. Old silo’s were repurposed as museums, restaurants and sports facilities.
4. Museum Küppersmühle is in one of those silo’s and houses one of the biggest modern arts museums in Germany
5. Its wooden staircase is the most impressive part of the remodelled structure
6. The Lehmbruck Museum is another major art museum in Duisburg, focused mostly on the sculptures of Wilhelm Lehmbruck.
7. Zoo Zajac is the world’s largest pet store, and even has crocodiles on sale.
